Mobile Medieval Combat Game

by Nicholas Mattiacci

Sword and shield in hand, fight your way through tournaments of enemies, upgrading your gear along the way.

A general summary of the game would be the player fights against NPC enemies one after another. The player's rewarded with gold each kill, the reward increasing with the kill streak. The player can spend this gold on upgraded gear. The enemies get progressively more difficult, this effect is amplified with the kill streak.

Combatants can only take two actions, controlled by two buttons in the bottom corners of the screen: attack and defend. Both actions are on a cooldown, the duration of which depends on the weapon/shield equipped. While defending, damage taken is reduced, the rate at which depending upon the shield equipped. Attacking damages the enemy of course. When either fighter runs out of health, they lose and the fight's over.

When the player wins, their streak is increased, they're rewarded with gold, and they have a chance to upgrade their gear before the next fight starts.

Monetization can take place either with advertisements or consumable microtransactions or a combination of both.

All team members will be given equal influence over the direction the app takes as we work on it, I'm happy to give tons of artistic freedom to a designer.

    My part

Over the next couple of months, I'm going to be writing a medieval combat game for mobile. I have enough spare time to get all of the development done but I'm useless when it comes to design. I'll be writing the app in PhoneGap so we can release it for every platform. While working on the game, I'll be using placeholder images and keeping track of what images need to be made. I'll also get the app ready to play sounds in case somebody can produce some nice audio.

    (Expected) Revenue

I've never released a game before, I don't expect much revenue if any. I will be paying for a small amount of advertising for the app though, and everybody who sticks with the project to release gets an even split including me.

    Risks & challenges

The release process is going to be a tough one for me, I've never released an app before and I want to make sure it's done right so our work goes to good use. I'll be working hard to give the app the release it needs.

The design is another huge one, the app's pretty worthless without a pretty face. Not just in the assets, but in the overall idea of the app, I'm sure the designer perspective will be immensely helpful.

      Function description

The designer will produce quality graphic assets to be used in the game. From menu backgrounds to buttons to enemies to swords, the designer crafts the look and feel of the entire game. Will also be looked to for guidance on UX design and the overarching concept of the game.

      Requirements

Being acquainted with tools like Photoshop or Illustrator is a plus, but anything you're comfortable with is fine.

      Offer

Every team member will be getting an even split of the revenue from the app. I'll be paying for a small amount of advertising.
