Project Beyond

by Chris

Low poly sandbox with RPG elements. Search the stars in your spaceships to find civilizations in different time zones.

    Before We Dive In

This project has already been started and has a group of people currently working on it, but don't let that put you off. Nothing is set in stone and if you join the team, any ideas you have can also be included in the project.

The game is being built in the Unreal Engine using C++, but if you know the Blue Print system well, please also apply. If you're applying to work on the models, you can use whatever program you want, but most of the team use Blender.

    Project Beyond

Project Beyond is a vast open world sandbox game with elements from RPG games. The player will be free to explore a range of environment rich planets, while collecting and building items, taking part in quests and improving their skills.

The game has a low poly art style and landscape.

    The Planets

Each plant in Project Beyond is set in its own time zone and theme. Allowing the player to go from exploring the depths of a medieval landscape, to sailing the 7 seas, to exploring a futuristic city. Each planet will have its own quests and storylines for you to dive into.

For the Alpha of the game, we're working on 3 core planets. One set in the medieval time, one in a pirate setting and the last in a futuristic setting. Over time we will add more and more plants into the game, some will have civilisations, some just be vast landscapes for you to check out.

The medieval planet is where will start to inject some magic into the game, allowing people to dive into the myths and legends of the time.

The pirate setting will allow people to take to the seas, on their own adventure. Again, exploring the myths of the time as they, as they upgrade and build their own ship and expand their crew.

The futuristic planet will be where people can really dive into the tech side of the game. Using robots and exploring the city.

    A True Sandbox

Project Beyond is also a sandbox game. The classic cutting down trees, digging a mine, building a base and crafting will also be here.  The player will be able to take advantage of the new futuristic tech to build themselves a vast complex factory, or maybe stick to the legends and myths, by diving deeper into the magic of the world.

    Survival

The different worlds of Project Beyond will come with their own threats. We want to keep away from the mobs only come out at night kind of thing and move to more constant threats.  Something like a wild bear could be a threat to you on one of the worlds. We of cause also want to add in our own unique threats as well.

    Space Tavel and Vehicle

This is where we get to the meat of the game. Project Beyond will have an in-depth building system for its spaceships and vehicle (Think something like Scrap Mechanic) allowing you to build your ship how you want. The game will start you off with a small ship that you can grow over time, into a quick and agile battleship or maybe go for more of a Death Star sized ship... or have both.

Space will have a number of things for you to find and explore and some dangers to face off and of cause all the planets to find and check out.

Wow, This is A Big Game!

We know, and we don't plan for it all to come together overnight. It's going to take a few months before we have anything big to show and we can start thinking about a Kickstarter, and then years to complete the game. But we're still as passionate about the game as we were a few months ago when it started, and that isn't going to change.

    We're Organized

This is something we're incredibly serious about. The project has all the correct documentation in place to make sure your work is protected. We have plans and a GDD in place, and use sites like Trello to keep track of what is being done by who. We also make sure to catch up at least once a week to discuss the game and see how everyone is doing.

As this is a big game, we have the first build mapped out and are focusing on building that first. A big game like this, and with us coming up with new exciting ideas all the time, runs the real risk of us getting sidetracked and the game never being done. That's why we're making sure we're sticking to the core gameplay, and the ideas are just that, ideas, for now.

We also know this isn't a full-time job and we won't put pressure on you if you can work due to being busy in the real world.

    There is More

We have more plans for the game, but if I put them all here you would be reading all day.

    My part

    Risks & challenges

There is a risk as this is such a big game that is never get done. However, the way we have planned it, so we're only working on sections at a time. We're also extremely passionate about the game.
