Lakinis Woods

by Simon Martin Michel

I'm looking for team members to polish an already fully functional demo level for the game Lakini's Woods

Lakini's Woods is a Virtual Novel and Oculus VR ready Video Game created by Simon Michel. It tells the story of a boy named Jonah and his experience of the Bardo Thodol, an intermediate state between life and death. After Jonah's death he regains consciousness in a surreal forest called "Lakini's Woods". Jonah has to find his light to move on from his former self and find his way out of the woods. His shadow has taken the form of soldiers, worms and enormous creatures that try to lead him deeper into darkness.

During his trials he comes face to face with the Dharmapalas, large god-like spirits that guide and help him throughout his journey. While fighting his way through the woods he keeps hearing the voice of a hunter's daughter, reading the Tibetan Book of the Dead to him (played by ASMR artist TheOneLilium). His shadow keeps speaking to him through rusty, old, metal speakers that are spread out across the woods.

The game is a non-linear, open world action adventure. Each Dharmapala has a devastating effect on Jonah's environment and he can use those effects to fight the shadow's acolytes.

    My part

I am a filmscore composer and game developer. I hold a master's degree in composition for film & theater from the ArtEZ conservatory in Arnhem. I've been working with directors and game developers for years, but Lakini's Woods is the first project I am developing on my own.

I spent the last 4 years learning how to work with Unreal Engine 4, how to implement models and animation, working with blueprints, writing basic code and implementing sound and music. I have experience in negotiating contracts, licenses and connecting with publishers. During my work as a filmscore composer in New York, The Netherlands, Germany and L.A I have built up a strong network of people who can help me push the project further once I have a polished competitive demo ready.

Until today, I have done everything related to the project by myself. I wrote the music, I negotiated an SFX license with soundrangers and recorded Foley in the woods, I implemented the models, the animations, wrote animation blueprints, level blueprints, character blueprints, I did the entire level design and also created most of the architecture in the game, recorded gameplay videos and edited the trailer.

    (Expected) Revenue

I have gathered a small budget through my work as a film score composer. I can pay 500€-1000€ for every delivered milestone.

(For example: level design milestone: Complete leveldesign for the 1st segment of the game world at 90 FPS VR on GTX 970 with no performance issues or intermittent FPS drops)

    Risks & challenges

There is no limit to how many feedback loops we will have and how many changes I will ask you to implement. I only pay for work that is completed by the deadline date until 23:59:59 and I only pay for fully completed milestones that I am satisfied with. I demand the same level of professionalism that is demanded of me, when I work on a large production or when I have to score a full length movie. I am experienced in the industry and I know what I can ask of you and what is simply considered punitive.

      Function description

I need a professional coder who has vast knowledge of C++ scripting and VR game optimization. In order for Lakini's Woods to work in VR, I need a strong framerate of 90 FPS. At no point may this framerate drop below the required value, but in order to accomplish this, I need someone who knows how to optimize every aspect of my demo, so that the framerate remains stable.

      Requirements

Send me a couple of anecdotes on how you solved performance problems in games, that you have worked on in the past. Either through codes you wrote yourself, or by changing certain game features and how these scripts and feature changes affected the other aspects of the game. I'm especially interested if you have knowledge of VR games.

      Offer

I can pay 500€-1000€ for each completed milestone.

You might have some really nice looking assets, but your lighting is absolute trash. Constructive criticism right fucking there. It looks like a dead world. The only light source you have is the sun. Add some torches here and there. Otherwise you are stabbing yourselves in the feet.
